World Psychiatry Congress

Image

Some of you will know that Dr Quinn has been leading on a mental health research project over the past couple of years.
He had a busy couple of weeks at the end of September, first presenting research findings at the EURACT Medical Education Conference in Leuven Belgium and then less than a week later at the World Psychiatry Congress in Mexico City.

eConsult - online advice & access to Blackheath

Image

eConsult is an online service that lets you look up your symptoms and get medical advice 24/7.

You might find the answers you need and not have to come to the surgery at all.

Equally, depending on your symptoms, you might be advised on appropriate medical care, e.g. make a routine appointment, go to a local Walk-In Centre or Minor Illness Unit, or, if your symptoms seem urgent & serious, to the Accident & Emergency Department.

For less urgent problems, eConsult will send a report to your doctors at Blackheath who will consider how best to advise you.

Visit the practice's web site www.bhgp.co.uk when you need advice.

Nurse Anne Sage

Nurse Anne Sage has retired from her nursing practice.
We wish her a long & healthy retirement.

Phlebotomy service returns to the practice

Image

Phlebotomy services have returned to the practice. We have a dedicated phlebotomy clinic on Wednesday mornings. Bloods can be taken at other times as well.

Additionally, the receptionist can book you into afternoon sessions in two other practices, one in Moreton and the other in Laird Street Birkenhead. This is an appointment service.

The service has been up & running at Blackheath for a couple of weeks now and seems to be running very well with good appointment availability.

No more GP access to MRI scanning

Image

From 1st July 2018, your doctors can no longer order MRI scans for musculoskeletal problems.

This means that if you have a problem, say with your shoulder, your back or your knee, that is not getting better, your doctors will have to refer you to a new service that has been set up for this reason.

Why should you have an NHS Health Check?

Check out the videos on this page!

February 2018

The NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check is a programme designed to identify those at greatest risk of developing heart disease and responding appropriately by providing lifestyle advice and considering medication for any high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Our GP Federation, Wirral GP Provider Ltd, has been commissioned to deliver this important programme to local residents and your surgery will be fully engaged in offering it to you.

The NHS Health Check is available to people aged 40-74 who have no history of any vascular disease (high blod pressure, heart disease, stroke or peripheral vascular disease) and who are not already on a statin

The process will involve having a blood test to measure cholesterol & sugar levels and then seeing a nurse or doctor for the Health Check and a discussion about what can be done to manage any risk identified.

Dr Hicks is moving on to pastures new

Dr Cathy Hicks who has been with the practice for over seven years is leaving us on 19/02/2018. We wish her all the very best in her new career moves.

Dr Juan Sierra

You probably know that Dr Bennett Quinn is a GP Trainer. Everyone in the practice plays their part in supporting GP Trainees who will be tomorrow's General Practitioners. Indeed, doctors who have been trainees at Blackheath are now established and successful GP's in their own practices both in Wirral & Liverpool. Some previous trainees are now showing great leadership abilities, supporting the development and introduction of new or improved services for patients in Wirral.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Juan Sierra to the practice for six months. Dr Sierra has worked in Accident & Emergency Medicine for about ten years and so he brings a lot of experience to the practice during his attachment.

We wish Dr Sierra a successful attachment in Blackheath.

WiFi service available at Blackheath

The NHS has installed free WiFi for patient use at Blackheath. We do try to run our appointments to schedule but this new free service will help while away the wait. It will also save you having to re-read the practice's fine collection of historical magazines.
